Dave Heflin Memorial

Delta State is sad to announce the passing of retired professor, David Butler Heflin, on February 8, 2022.
Dave was born a schoolteacher’s son and learned to love teaching watching his mother teach school from a playpen in the back of her classroom. He went on to graduate from Itawamba Junior College, Delta State University and the University of Southern Mississippi.
In the early 70’s, he went camping on the Buffalo River and it changed the whole direction of his life which included teaching Outdoor Recreation for over 30 years at his beloved Delta State University. He would say that his former students were what he was most proud of other than his own children. He spoke of them often, and their continued contact with him was a source of great joy.
Dave and the late Henry Outlaw were lifetime friends. They were like brothers and are now together again. Dave has passed from this world and is joining his friends, Henry, Barry, and Tony around the campfire they have kept going for him. Many stories will be told. Mostly true ones and so much laughter.
Dave Heflin is survived by his wife, Brenda Land Heflin, whom he was married to for almost 57 years and his children, Spring, Amber and Land and their spouses and grandchildren. We will miss him for the rest of our days.
