Mark Houston Memorial

Delta State University, State Auditor Shad White, and the family and friends of the late Mark Houston, CPA, wish to honor his memory and his service to state and local government in Mississippi through the newly established Mark Houston Endowed Scholarship. Mark was a 1982 graduate of DSU, receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accountancy and earning his CPA the following year. He served for more than 25 years as an auditor and manager in the Technical Assistance Division of the Office of the State Auditor.

While at DSU, Mark was a devoted member of Gene Ayers’ Renaissance group where he played bass guitar. After retiring from the auditor’s office, Mark became Comptroller and then County Administrator in Madison County, Mississippi. He later served in the private sector with Government Consultants, Inc. where he continued to dispense sound financial advice to counties and municipalities all over Mississippi.

The scholarship will be awarded each year beginning with the Fall 2022 semester and will include a paid summer internship in the Office of the State Auditor. The recipient will be known as the University’s Houston Scholar. The scholarship and internship will be awarded each year to a deserving student in the Division of Accounting, CIS and Finance within the College of Business and Aviation. In addition, the endowment will help honor Mark’s beloved professors, John Yurkow and John Quon.
